"Close the Gap" Endowed Scholarship



The "Close the Gap" Endowed Scholarship was established in 2011 by The Gap Partnership to assist graduating seniors from Union High School.  Qualifying applicants must have a 2.5 GPA.  The "Close the Gap" Endowed Scholarship is a last dollar scholarship to meet tuition and fee costs that are not funded by other forms of financial aid.

The A. L. Witt Memorial Scholarship was established in 1985 to assist students with financial need and academic promise.

AIMS Higher Annual Scholarship



The MECC AIMS Higher Scholarship encourages Virginia-resident high school students in Lee, Scott, Wise, Dickenson Counties and the City of Norton to complete a challenging curriculum, and to pursue higher education. Graduating High School students who meet the requirements of the AIMS Scholars (Virginia Scholars) program will have the opportunity to attend up to two years (72 semester credits) of college without paying any tuition or fees out of pocket.  All requirements (coursework and community service) must be satisfied by the date of the student’s high school graduation. All coursework requirements must appear on the high school transcript.

Students who receive the AIMS Higher Scholarship must attend full time (at least 12 credits per fall and spring semester) and complete their coursework within three years. The student must attend MECC the fall semester immediately following high school graduation. Students who attend another college prior to enrolling full-time at MECC are no longer eligible for the MECC AIMS Higher Scholarship.  To continue receiving the AIMS Higher Scholarship while at MECC, a student must maintain a 2.0 overall grade point average and a 2.0 semester average each semester of attendance.

Alice Graham Williams Memorial Scholarship



The Alice Graham Williams Memorial Scholarship was created in 2003 to assist students with financial need and/or academic potential. The scholarship may be administratively restricted to meeting matching requirements for AIMS Higher Scholarship.

Alice Stallings Scholarship



The Alice Stallings Scholarship was established in 1983 in the name of one of MECC’s first nursing faculty members to assist second year nursing students with financial need. Recipient must have at least a 3.0 GPA.

Allen Gibson Memorial Criminal Justice Scholarship



The Allen Gibson Memorial Criminal Justice Scholarship was created in 2008 in memory of an alumnus of MECC’s criminal justice program who was killed in the line of duty while working for the police department in the Town of Waverly, Virginia. The scholarship assists criminal justice students from Wise County with financial need and who have earned at least a 3.0 GPA.

Alpha Natural Resources Annual Scholarship



The Alpha Natural Resources Annual Scholarship was established in 2005.  Award priority is given to dependents of employees and employees of any Alpha subsidiary.  Scholarship awards of $125, $250, $375, or $500 are provided per semester, based on number of credit hours that are attempted.  If funds remain after Alpha Natural Resources employees and dependents are served, scholarships may be awarded to other students.

Appalachia Alumni Scholarship Buccaneer



The Appalachia Alumni Scholarship was established by the Appalachia Alumni Association to honor an outstanding Union High School graduate who resides in Appalachia. This award is provided in partnership with the Big Stone Gap Buccaneer Alumni Association. 




Appalachia Centennial Scholarship



The Appalachia Centennial Scholarship was established in 2007 to assist high school graduates from the Appalachia community that have academic promise and/or financial need.

The Arlis Deaton Memorial Scholarship was established in 1999 to assist a student from Lee County involved in the medical field, preferably respiratory care, nursing, or transfer to a four-year medical field.

Benny Wampler Scholarship for Business Management



The Benny Wampler Scholarship for Business Management Scholarship was established in 2009 in honor of the outstanding service of the Deputy Director of the Virginia Department of Mine, Minerals and Energy who retired in 2008. The scholarship assists a MECC students majoring in business management.

The Big Stone Gap Lions Club Scholarship was established in 1994 to assist high school graduates from Big Stone Gap.

Bill and Jane Stone Buccaneer Endowed



Established to honor the memory of Bill and Jane Stone. The Buccaneer Endowed Scholarships are available to Union High School graduates and graduates of the former Powell Valley and Appalachia High Schools. Students must have a 2.0 GPA and have financial need. Applicants must submit two letters of reference, and if selected, must attend the annual Buccaneer reunion picnic. 




Billie Jean Scott Buccaneer Scholarship



The Billie Jean Scott Buccaneer Scholarship was established in 2012 through giving by the C. Bascom Slemp Foundation to assist Union High School graduates that have financial need and academic promise. Recipients are selected by the Buccaneer Scholarship Committee, which collaborates with the MECC Foundation staff in administering the fund. Scholarship award is renewable for a second year if funds are available and satisfactory academic progress is being made.  Student applicants must submit references.

The Bobby R. Adams/A & A Security Scholarship was established by MECC alumni J. D. and Sam Adams in 2006 in memory of their father and to assist graduating seniors of J. I. Burton High School majoring in criminal justice/police science (first priority), criminal justice/police science students from the Wise County/Norton area (second priority),and students from Wise County/Norton area without regard to academic major (third priority).

The Bon Secours St. Mary's Healthcare Scholarship was established in 1996 by St. Mary’s Hospital, and later supported by Bon Secours, to assist students pursuing a health care major.

Bruce K. and Patsy Y. Robinette Scholarship



The Bruce K. and Patsy Y. Robinette Scholarship was established in 2012 to assist graduating high school seniors from Wise and Dickenson Counties and the City of Norton who plan to pursue a two-degree degree or certificate, both transfer and career-tech. Students can be either full-time or part-time students, must have at least a 2.5 GPA, and financial need is not a requirement.

Brunner Hall Annual Scholarship



This scholarship is available to students in our service region who are enrolled in health care, business technology, industrial tech, or other non-transfer (AA&S) programs. Preference is given to students who hold a part-time job or a college work study job. 




Buccaneer Alumni Annual Scholarship



The Buccaneer Scholarship was established in 2003 by the Buccaneer Scholarship Committee to assist Powell Valley High School (and now Union High School) graduates with financial need and academic promise. The Buccaneer Scholarship Committee collaborates with the MECC Foundation staff in selecting recipients.  The scholarship is renewable for a second year if funds are available and satisfactory academic progress is being made.  Student applicants must submit references.

Buccaneer in Honor of Ed and Tommy Daugherty Scholarship



The Buccaneer in Honor of Ed and Tommy Daugherty Scholarship  is a memorial scholarship established in 2010 by the children of Edward and Tommy Dougherty to honor their parents. It assists Union High School graduates that have financial need and academic promise. Recipients are selected by the Buccaneer Scholarship Committee, which collaborates with the MECC Foundation staff in administering the fund. This is a one time scholarship recognizing long-time educator and community volunteer Garnett Gilliam. This scholarship is only for graduates of Union High School, Powell Valley High School and Appalachia High School.

Burdette Family Scholarship: Carlyle, Nell, Carol, Joe, and Sarah



For Union High school graduates for tuition, books, and other expenses. The scholarship was created by Joe Burdette in 2018 in honor of his family who is originally from the Appalachia and Big Stone Gap area. Students should have a minimum 2.0 GPA and financial need, although scholarships may be awarded to those students who do not qualify for federal financial aid. This award is only for 2018.  




Campbell S. Edmonds Scholarship



The Campbell S. Edmonds Scholarship was established by the MECC Foundation board and the C. Bascom Slemp Foundation to honor the late Slemp Foundation Board member, Campbell S. Edmonds.  Unrestricted scholarship awards may be made to students from Lee, Scott, and Counties, or the City of Norton.

Captain Russell E. Cooper Memorial Buccaneer Scholarship




Captain Russell E. Cooper served as an adjutant to the commanding general of the 38th Artillery Brigade in Korea when he and five others were killed in an airplane crash in the mountains of South Korea on August 4, 1963. The scholarship was established by Cooper’s brother and sister-in-law, Kyle and Bobbie Jean Cooper. Captain Cooper and Kyle Cooper were both graduates of Big Stone Gap High School.
The Captain Russell E. Cooper Buccaneer Endowed Scholarship will benefit students from Wise County in any discipline. Students may be recent graduates or adults returning to college. “I believe Russell had great potential and didn’t get the opportunity to fulfill it.“ said Kyle Cooper. “Hopefully, this scholarship will help someone achieve theirs.” 
Russell was born on December 2, 1936, in Appalachia, Virginia. He was the third of eight children born to Floyd E. Cooper and Helen A. Cooper. In 1941 he and his family moved to Big Stone Gap, Virginia in the summer of 1941 and resided at 315 E. Third Street North near the lower entrance to Bullitt Park.
He began first grade at Big Stone Gap Elementary School in 1943 and graduated from Big Stone Gap High School in 1955. As indicated in the 1955 School Bell, Russell participated in many school activities and enjoyed interacting with his classmates while serving as president of his class, president of the key club and captain of the basketball team. He was awarded a Dupont academic scholarship to attend the University of Virginia.
Russell attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville from 1955 to 1959 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce degree on June 15, 1959. While at UVA, he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and the Corp of Cadets. He was also a member of the drill team (Monroe Rifles) and the honorary society of the Army Reserve Officers Training Corps (Jefferson Sabers). His senior year he received the U.S. Army’s Superior Cadet Ribbon. On the same day he graduated from the University of Virginia, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army.
Cooper began his Army career at Fort Sill, Oklahoma as a member of the 44th Army Artillery.  He completed artillery and missile training while there and was then assigned to a missile site in the Los Angeles area. He next attended Airborne School at Fort Benning, Ga. and completed his training in May of 1960.
He began training to be an Army pilot at Fort Rucker as his next assignment and after completing several flight schools (1960-1962) he was assigned to fly with the U. S. Army Parachute Team (The Golden Knights) and spent some time touring the country with them before being assigned to the 38th Artillery Brigade in Korea. Russell was promoted to the rank of Captain and was serving as an Adjutant to the Commanding General at the time of his death.
The Buccaneer Scholarship Fund was established by the Big Stone Gap Buccaneer Alumni Group more than a decade ago to honor notable Buccaneer alumni and teachers at Big Stone Gap High School. The fund, which started with one scholarship, has now grown to more than 15 individual scholarship and more than $1M in endowed funds.




Carol B. Rivers Memorial Endowed Scholarship



Carol Rivers of the Wallens Creek community, was born in 1937 and passed away in 2016. She retired from the Division of Continuing Education at Mountain Empire Community College in 1998. She is the mother of MECC Dean of Business and Technology Jane Jones. 




Carol Jane Fouts Scholarship



The Carol Jane Fouts Scholarship was created in 1996 in memory of Lee County resident, Carol Jane Fouts, and is restricted to Lee County students.

The Cawood Family Scholarship was established in 1999 to benefit Big Stone Gap residents who are older, returning students. Recipients should have a grade point average of 2.5 or above.

The Chant Branham Kelly Memorial Scholarship was established in 2002 in remembrance of an outstanding Pound leader.  The scholarship is awarded to assist residents of Pound.

Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship Honoring The Anne & Gene Worrell Foundation



The Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy was created in 2006 to honor leading philanthropists from each of Virginia’s 23 community colleges as well as the system’s statewide foundation. Each year the Commonwealth Legacy Award Scholarship is given in honor of the Chancellor's Award recipient.

Connie D. Reasor Scholarship



The Connie D. Reasor Scholarship was established in 1996 in remembrance of a Lee County special education teacher.  The memorial scholarship assists Lee County high school graduates who are physical therapy, respiratory therapy or emergency medical technician (EMT) students, students that have special physical needs, or students who plan to teach special education.

Dana Austin Memorial Scholarship



This scholarship was created by retired MECC Faculty Member Tim Austin honoring his mother, Dana Austin. The scholarship is awarded to students enrolled in a health science or nursing program and may be used for tuition, books, and other educational needs. Preference is given to students enrolled in a nursing related program.

The Dave and Julia T. Isaac Scholarship was established in 1984 to assist full-time students based on financial need and a minimum 2.0 GPA.

David Ray Wampler Memorial Scholarship



The David Ray Wampler Memorial Scholarship was established in 2012 to honor a former Powell Valley High School graduate and U. S. Army veteran.  Preference is given to full-time recent high school graduates or veterans with financial need and a minimum 2.0 GPA.

Debra Rene Greene Memorial Scholarship -- Endowed



Debra was the daughter of Charles R. Greene and the late Mary Roberts Greene. The scholarship was created by her father, following Debra’s death in June 2019. Charles felt privileged to have witnessed the academic achievements and contributions of his daughter despite early onset kidney failure shortly after her graduation from J.J. Kelly High School in 1984.
Debra was a 29-year kidney transplant survivor having received her donor kidney from her uncle, Dennis Greene. Despite this obstacle she received her Associate Degree from Mountain Empire Community College in 1993 and her Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Virginia Intermont College in 1996. She served eleven years as Guidance Counselor at the Flatwoods Job Corps in Coeburn, Virginia positively influencing many young lives as evidenced by their fond remembrance of her.
Debra was also a born-again Christian and attended Bethel Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. She was an inspiration to all who knew her, always offering a warm smile, a cheerful greeting, and an uplifting faith in Jesus Christ. She loved to laugh and to have others laugh with her bringing joy to their lives.

The Dickenson County AIMS Higher Scholarship was established in 2005 through special event fundraising to assist Dickenson County high school graduates who have met the academic, attendance, and community service requirements for the AIMS Higher Scholarship.

The Don Wax Memorial Scholarship was established in 2007, with priority given to a Wise County student majoring in business or related field, with a GPA of 3.2 or above.

Donald and Victoria Ratliff Scholarship



The Donald and Victoria Ratliff Scholarship was established by Donald and Victoria Ratliff in 2010 to assist students enrolled in business and information technology curricula. Students should have a minimum 3.0 GPA and financial need for the scholarship.

The Donald McCollum Scholarship was established in 1983 from memorial contributions for an MECC employee to assist MECC students.

Dr. George F. Sutherland Scholarship



The Dr. George F. Sutherland Scholarship was established in 1997 to assist students in a medical related field (nursing or respiratory) with financial need and academic promise, which is a 3.0 GPA.

Dr. Lorraine C. Turner/Kara Kennedy Endowed Scholarship



Scholarship was established in 2018 to honor Dr. Lorraine C. Turner, former superintendent of Russell County Schools, as well as Kara Kennedy, a RN nursing graduate of Mountain Empire Community College. This is an endowed scholarship. The funds are available to all students enrolled in Clinical Health Science Programs at MECC. Students must have a 2.0 GPA and live within the service region. Students may be enrolled part-time or full-time.  Financial need is not a requirement. The scholarship may be used for tuition, books, and other supplies, including testing fees for clinical courses. 




Dr. Luis Adongay - Willie Joe and Laura Peters Scholarship



The Dr. Luis Adongay Scholarship was created in memory of Dr. Luis Adongay in 1999, and the Willie Joe and Laura Peters Scholarship was created with a bequest from Willie Joe and Laura Lyon Peters in 2004.  The scholarships were combined and continue to assist MECC students from Wise County and the City of Norton, with preference to graduates of Union and John I. Burton High Schools.

Evelyn Strouth Annual Scholarship



The Evelyn Strouth Annual Scholarship was created by retired MECC History Professor Mike Strouth in honor of his mother, Evelyn. The scholarship benefits students enrolled in the LPN/RN nursing programs, with preference given to Wise and Dickenson County students. 




Faith Cox Buccaneer Scholarship



The Faith Cox Buccaneer Scholarship was established in 2008 through giving by the C. Bascom Slemp Foundation to assist Powell Valley High School, and now Union High School, graduates that have financial need and academic promise. Recipients are selected by the Buccaneer Scholarship Committee, which collaborates with the MECC Foundation staff in administering the fund. The scholarship award is renewable for a second year if funds are available and satisfactory academic progress is being made.  Student applicants must submit references.

The Fannie Ringley Nursing Scholarship was established in 1996 to provide financial assistance to a Lee County student that is in a nursing program.

Farmers and Miners Bank Annual Scholarship



The Farmers and Miners Bank Annual Scholarship was established in 2006 to benefit one new student and a returning student annually. Scholarship award is renewable for a second year if funds are available and satisfactory academic progress is being made. The recipient must have financial need.  Scholarships will be rotated between counties in the following order 1) Lee, 2) Scott, 3) Dickenson, 4) Wise and/or City of Norton.

The Farmers and Miners Bank Endowed Scholarship was established in 2006 to benefit one new student and a returning student annually. Scholarship award is renewable for a second year if funds are available and satisfactory academic progress is being made. The recipient must have financial need.  Scholarships will be rotated between counties in the following order 1) Lee, 2) Scott, 3) Dickenson, 4) Wise and/or City of Norton.

The Ford C. Quillen Scholarship was established to assist full-time students with financial need and academic promise from Lee, Scott, and Wise Counties and the City of Norton who are enrolled in an undergraduate program at Mountain Empire Community College or The University of Virginia at Wise.  Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA or better.  Ford C. Quillen Scholarship applications are available at the applicable high school guidance offices and must be submitted to the applicable county's Chamber of Commerce.  Recipients are selected by the county Chambers of Commerce.

This scholarship honoring the Rutherford family is to be awarded to recent high school graduates (1-3 years) of Lee and Wise County who demonstrate financial need and academic promise. Students may be enrolled full or part-time. Preference is given to students with a demonstrated leadership promise through a class, church, volunteer or student activity. The award is for one year only and may be used for tuition and books.

The Fred W. Dougherty Civitan Scholarship was established in 1999 by the Gate City Civitan Club to honor a dedicated member who had served the club for 53 years and to benefit Scott County students with financial need and academic potential with at least a 2.0 average GPA.

Jack R. & Patricia Cox Howard Viking/Buccaneer Scholarship



The Jack R. & Patricia Cox Howard Viking/Buccaneer Scholarship was established in January 2016 by Jack R. and Patricia Cox Howard.  Qualifying applicants must have a minimum 2.0 GPA.

Jack and Patricia (Pat) Howard graduated from Powell Valley High School in 1960 and 1962, respectively. They attended Big Stone Gap schools from elementary school until 1959 when the BSG High School moved to the new Powell Valley High School.

After high school graduation, Jack attended Clinch Valley College in Wise, Virginia, before enlisting in the United States Air Force. In 1966, Jack began his long career in the Federal Government. At the time of his retirement, he was the Human Resources Director for the U.S. Department of Treasury. He later began another career as a Federal Government contractor, working until his most recent retirement in 2013.

His wife, Pat Cox Howard, is also a retired Federal employee. Her career included working in the White House (WH) for many years. In 1971, she became the Assistant to the Social Secretary at the WH. Years later, she worked at the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) where at the time of her retirement, she was the Special Assistant to the Assistant Attorney General (OJP), DOJ.

After living in the Metropolitan Northern Virginia for over 47 years, Jack and Pat retired again and moved to Knoxville, Tennessee. Because of their longstanding desire to give back to their hometown in some meaningful way, the established this Viking/Buccaneer Scholarship at MECC.

The James (Jim) W. Robinson Hall of Honor Scholarship was established in 2003 to provide financial assistance to an MECC student.

Lee County Endowed Scholarship



The Lee County Endowed Scholarship was established in 2018 to benefit residents of Lee County that are pursing a degree or certificate at Mountain Empire Community College. Scholarship recipients may be recent high school graduates, or residents of Lee County who are returning to college as an adult. Recent high school graduates must have a minimum 3.0 GPA to qualify. Adult students returning to college must have completed at least one semester at MECC with a 3.0 GPA to qualify.  Students may be enrolled full-time or part-time. Scholarships are open to any academic discipline. Scholarships may be applied to tuition, fees, and books (including technology requirement for nursing program). Scholarship may be renewed the following year pending satisfactory academic progress by the recipient.

The Lonesome Pine Endowed Scholarship was created in 2017 to Union High School students with tuition, books, and other college expenses. Beginning with the graduating class of 2023, students graduating from a public school or recognized home association in the counties of Lee, Scott, Wise, Dickenson and City of Norton can attend MECC tuition-free. To qualify, students must:

  • Maintain a 2.0 for each semester and cumulative GPA and be continuously enrolled, full-time
  • Meet Virginia in-state domicile requirements, reside in the service region, and able to provide proof of residency
  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit all required documentation by August 1 annually. (May 1 for Summer enrollment)
  • Complete the MECC Foundation Scholarship application by August 1 annually. (May 1 for Summer enrollment)
 

This is a last dollar scholarship for tuition only – federal and state aid and additional scholarships will be applied first.

Micron Opportunity Fund



The Micron Opportunity Fund is provided by the Virginia Community College System to support students pursuing STEM-related programs such as Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electronics, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Automotive, Aerial, Aviation Maintenance, Mechatronics, and any skilled trades programs such as HVAC, Facilities Maintenance, or other programs specific colleges would like to propose for inclusion.

Robert and Dorothy Isaac Scholarship



Robert "Bob" Isaac was one of Mountain Empire Community College’s strongest supporters for over three decades. He was elected to the MECC Foundation Board of Directors in 1982 and served on the board continuously since that time. He was named an Emeritus Board Member in July 2021. From 1991 to 1993, and from 1996 to 2006, he served as board Chair. Because of his long and distinguished history of service to MECC, Bob received the Virginia Community College System’s Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy and was named as the 2007 MECC Hall of Honor Recipient.  

The son of Dave and Julia Tamer Isaac, Bob grew up in Appalachia and graduated from Appalachia High School in 1950 and later graduated with a degree in Business Administration from Virginia Tech. He then served two years in the Air Force as a Finance Officer at Otis Air Force Base, Falmouth Mass. and was discharged from the Reserves as a Captain. 

In June 1958 he married Dorothy Skorupa Isaac and remained happily married 63 years until his death. Bob and Dorothy had three children, Kimberly Isaac DeHart, Robert Isaac Jr., and Michael Kevin Isaac, along with eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. They lived to Norton and owned and operated Dave’s Department Store from 1959 until 1994 and had a store in Coeburn from 1979 until 1984. 

After his retirement, his new job for more than two decades was a volunteer at the Southwest Virginia Cancer Center, a day he looked forward to and did whatever he could do whether it be a warm blanket, push a wheelchair, obtain food for chemo patients from all local eateries or just a chat or smile to the patients. Bob served on a number of local boards and initiatives. His volunteer spirit was endless.  Mr. Isaac passed in 2021.

Roger A. Daugherty Hall of Honor



Scholarship established to honor Roger A. Daugherty, founder of the Buccaneer Scholarship for Big Stone Gap High School alumni. This scholarship is only available to graduates of Union High School, and former graduates of Powell Valley and Appalachia High School. Students must have a 2.0 GPA and have financial need. Students must submit two letters of reference and attend an annual Buccaneer reunion picnic.

The Sandy Honaker McGlothlin Scholarship was established in 2013 to assist graduating seniors of Scott County, and will be announced at high school awards ceremony.  Recipients must be full-time students with financial need and a minimum 2.0 GPA.

The Sarah Julia Broadwater Scholarship was established in 1993 to assist students from Scott, Lee, and Dickenson Counties, and the upper area of Wise County (Towns of Pound and Wise) who have financial need and academic promise.

The Scott County Ambassadors Scholarship was established in 2004 to assist students engaged in organized service learning activities while attending MECC.  Scholarships are administratively restricted to students participating in the AmeriCorps Program.

The Sharon Carter Marrs Endowed Scholarship was established by the Big Stone Gap Buccaneers. Students must be graduates of Union High School, or former graduates of Appalachia or Powell Valley High School. 




Shirley Lane Stiles Memorial Nursing Scholarship



The Shirley Lane Stiles Memorial Nursing Scholarship was established by the family of Shirley Stiles to assist a high school graduate of Wise County, Lee County, Dickenson County or the City of Norton who has been admitted to the nursing program.  The scholarship may be renewed for students making satisfactory academic progress.  The recipient must show financial need, have a 3.0 GPA, and the capacity to become an outstanding nurse.  Student must submit references.

Square and Compasses Masonic Scholarship



The Square and Compasses Masonic Scholarship was established in 1999 by the Big Stone Gap Masonic Lodge #208 to assist a Union High School graduate.  The recipient must have a 2.0 GPA and may be eligible for a second year renewal, dependent on maintaining at least a 2.0 academic average. Awards are $750 to begin and $750 to continue, based on academic progress.  Student applicants must submit two letters of reference.  The scholarship award will be announced at the Union High School awards ceremony.

The Stafford Family Endowed Scholarship was established in 2009 to benefit resident of Wise, Lee, Scott, Dickenson, or Russell Counties.  Awards must be made to students in a business related curriculum and awarded to students with financial need.

T. Reid Rankin Family Educational Trust Fund



The T. Reid Rankin Family Educational Trust Fund Scholarship was created in 2014 by his daughter to honor the memory of T. Reid Rankin, who was a native of Big Stone Gap. The scholarship should be awarded to students from Union High School (first priority) or southwest Virginia (second priority). Students may be full-time or part-time. Scholarship may be renewable if funds are available and student is making satisfactory academic progress.

Wallens Ridge State Prison Employee Fund Scholarship



The Wallens Ridge State Prison Employee Fund Scholarship was established in 2005, with priority given to a dependent of current Wallens Ridge State Prison employee. The recipient must have financial need and a 2.5 GPA. If no there is no applicant that is a WRSP dependent, another qualified MECC student will be selected.

The Wellmont Foundation Ambassador Scholarship was established to support students who are enrolled in health care majors.  The recipients may be asked to provide community service as a condition of the award.
